In 2005, a savage drought gripped the central highland province of Binh Thuan, known as the coffee belt, creating a situation where 1 million faced water shortages and 500,000 went hungry on a daily basis. Additionally, the drought killed off huge swaths of coffee trees and sharply lowered the possibility for irrigation.
VRE and our volunteers rushed to aid those in need by giving out water, rice, sugar, noodles and cooking oil, helping people bridge the gap until the rainy season commenced.
