Cyclone Nargis tore through Myanmar in 2008, resulting in more than 134,000 dead or missing and leaving more than 2.4 million destitute or homeless.

Because of the depth of the destruction and the desperation of those denied international aid by the ruling military junta, VRE used local connections to gain entry to the closed-off country, bringing vital aid to 5,500 victims before the government allowed large-scale relief.
